2008 theme:
Living Between Cultures

The 2008 Suburban Mosaic titles build upon last year’s theme of immigration.  Each of the selections, in some way, focuses on the characters finding their identity by living between cultures.

What is the Suburban Mosaic Book of the Year?
The suburbs of Cook and Lake County, home for many of us, continue to grow in diversity - with many people from many races and ethnic backgrounds. Our communities are reflecting a "mosaic" - a work of art patterned from distinct pieces - but together making something beautiful. We realize, however, that racism, religious bigotry and ethnic hostilities are still present in our communities. The Suburban Mosaic Book of the Year is a program that wants to confront issues - issues of racial and social justice. We believe that education and communication can break down barriers between people.

When will the program start?
You can begin reading the book at any time. Discussion groups are scheduled throughout the year.

How can I participate?
All of the libraries listed under the participating organizations will have copies of the books and discussion groups on various dates.

Your own book club might be willing to read and discuss this book. Or you can start a group. Finally, you can just read the book on your own.

The children's books will be read and discussed in school districts listed and in some local parochial schools. You can also ask your school to join the program.

Check at your local school or library for details on related programming.
